Samuel Leads the Learning

Samuel had a turn at leading the learning in Room 8 on Friday when he shared a book he had found at the Pakuranga library.
Samuel identified that the book had many interesting adjectives and verbs, and as he read some passages from the book, students in the class told him what they thought the WOW words were.

Drawing 3-D shapes

Today we used some of the ideas we have been learning about to draw 3-D shapes outside.
In groups of 2 or 3, we practised drawing, watched 2 instructional videos, and then created our masterpieces in chalk in the playground. Have a look and see how we got on.

Algebra

This week in Maths we looked at some basic algebra.
Sometimes a number is changed with a letter.
We talked about how both sides of the equation need to be balanced.

Breakout

We solved some tricky puzzles on Tuesday.

Room 8 participated in a Breakout - solving puzzles and using clues to find the combinations to open a series of locks and try and find out what was in the Breakout box.

We had to use many skills including collaboration, creativity, communication, problem-solving, close observation, thinking and perseverance.

Animal Adaptations

We had a great trip to the Auckland Zoo.

We are learning about animal adaptations - the way animals are suited to their environments.
Frazier, the zoo teacher told us about alligators and crocodiles, Galapagos Tortoises, lemurs, and how they are suited to the places where they live.

We got to touch a real snake-skin that was nearly three meters long.

Battleships

Today in maths we played live battleships in our class.
A grid was made on the carpet and we had to name a coordinate to take a shot at the ships.
Each student stood at the coordinates where they shot. They sat down if the shot missed and stood if their shot hit. We ended up sinking all the ships.

Raymond's Story

My Play Date with Daniel and Reuben

Beeb, beeb!” Today l’m having a play date with Daniel and Reuben. I was thrilled and couldn’t wait. l told my dad, “Drive faster!” Soon the cool car was as fast as a space ship! 5 minutes later there was a traffic jam but we eventually made a way out. Finally, we arrived and I said hello to Daniel.

As we were heading up the stairs I asked, “Where’s Reuben?” Daniel pretended he didn’t know. When we got up the stairs Reuben suddenly jumped out of nowhere and shouted, “BOO!”  Then Reuben was bursting with laughter.

Later we made our own bookmarks. We spent a lot of time making them and soon our hands were getting sore. Just when I wanted to make the third one the doorbell rang.

Ding, dong! The doorbell was as loud as a fire truck. Then I said, “Bye, bye,” to Daniel and Reuben.

Reuben's Story

MY HOLIDAY!
RING RING went the phone. Jasmine got it. Jasmine said, "Go get the door, they're here." I was bursting with excitement because Raymond was here.

Raymond said, "Why did you not open the door?" "Because the bell is broken," I said. I ran upstairs and got the ipad. We pressed minecraft. We gave Daniel's ipad to Raymond. I played on mine. We played on survival. It was fantastic. We took turns... then we played object tag - a game where you can't tag living things but carpet and floor separated and you can tag teddy bears and pillows and couches. You can tag the top floors too but if they are touching the thing you tagged you are in.

Then we played minecraft parkour. We made the floor lava and we tried jumping over it without getting touched. We jumped from couch to couch. Then we went to the Pakuranga library because there was a minecraft programme. Raymond came but he didn't bring his ipad. We did. There was some spares so Raymond took one.

We saw one of our other friends and we played multi-player. It wasn't a long time until Daniel's server was five out of five. Me, Raymond and our other friend was playing with Daniel. There was  a surviving area. It is cool but people stopped playing on Daniel's server because Daniel's game kept on crashing.

A lot of people started to play on my server. When I looked around I saw someone with a texture pack and he was playing on mine! Raymond and me were looking, then it said no name joined the game! We went to the jail then the mystery person did too.

When we went to Raymond's house we had a play date with Justin. He brought his ipad and we played on Justin's minecraft. It was escape the prison. He showed us how to do it. We called him the parkour master then he let us play. Raymond tried but he failed on the first jump then I had a turn and I failed on the first jump. Then Daniel had a turn and he failed on the first jump too! Then Jasmine said it is time to go.

Samuel's Story

My Awesome Holidays

“Yay, wahoo,” said my sister. “I am going to beat this tough, spiky angry Ankylosaurus.”
“Samuel! Samuel. Come and help me beat this last Ankylosaurus! It’s nearly dead.”
“Ok! Ok!”

Oops, sorry. I haven’t told you what we were playing. You probably know what we were playing. It is, of course, Jurassic World. “I’m coming, I’m coming.” (Looking onto Felicia's iPad). I don’t think we could kill it in 67 hits so I’m sorry. That Ankylosaurus still has 210312 health points even if you are the terrifying tyrannosaurus rex, you only deal 3103 x 50 damage. “Ok! Ok!” “I’m not playinggggggggg!

Let’s ride our bikes to the park. 10 minutes later I sped off on my bike, putting my sister at my heels.
